Starting Days narra del periodo in cui Haruka e Makoto hanno frequentato il primo anno di scuola media all'Iwatobi. Dopo la partenza di Rin per l'Australia, Haruka si sente molto frustrato e, ogni volta che rientra in piscina, pensa alla staffetta che aveva corso alle elementari insieme a lui, Makoto, e Nagisa, e si sente solo. Sia Haru, sia Makoto iniziano a porsi la domanda se vogliono veramente continuare col nuoto. In questa delicata fase sono persone esterne al duo, come compagni di classe, senpai del club di nuoto, ad innescare il punto di domanda. è soprattutto diventando amici di Asahi e Ikuya, due kurasumeito di Haru, che scattano tutta una serie di gelosie, incomprensioni, sentimenti contrastanti che scaturiscono da un cambiamento in atto, cambiamento che porterà Makoto e Haruka ad essere quello che sono in Free!. Ed infatti la risposta alla quale giungono è scontata, perché sappiamo bene com'è che proseguirà la storia, però è stato bello affrontare tutto il percorso di crescita che ha portato i personaggi a maturare un certo tipo di attitudine alla vita, ma innanzitutto al nuoto.
